Preparedness

Systems

Incorporated into the Durham Research Lab are various systems specifically designed to detect smoke, report fires, and if necessary, provide a means for safe exit of occupants. Durham Research Lab does not have a broadcast system. If there is an emergency in the building, fire alarm audio and visual devices will be activated.

  1. Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) (Landlord Maintained)
    1. In the event of an emergency fire situation, the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP), located in the basement level.
    2. The FACP identifies all fire alarm devices.
  2. Smoke Detection System (Landlord Maintained)
    1. Upon detection of smoke, the smoke detectors located in air handling units will:
      1. Automatically shut down the air handling units to prevent the spread of smoke.
      2. Provide initial warning of smoke at the FACP.
      3. Activate audible and visual devices on each floor.
    2. Smoke detectors in all elevator corridors will:
      1. Provide initial warning of smoke at the FACP.
      2. Activate audible and visual devices in the building.
      3. Activate automatic recall of elevators. Elevator fire service emergency operation. The elevators will be recalled to the primary or secondary landing zones in the event of a fire. Do not attempt to use the elevators. They will be out of service to prevent them from being called to the fire floor. Firefighters will be able to take control of the elevators for firefighting operations.
  3. Manual Fire Alarm Pull Boxes (Landlord Maintained)
    1. Each floor has Manual Fire Alarm Pull Boxes by all stairwell exits, by the FACP room in basement hall, by the Duke Medicine exit, and by the side loading dock exit.
    2. These boxes will cause an audible/visible alarm to be activated in the building.
    3. In addition, an alarm indicating the floor affected will be displayed at the FACP.
  4. Fire Extinguishers (Landlord Maintained)
    1. All Fire Extinguishers in the common areas of the Research Lab are located in the Fire Extinguisher Cabinets. Operational instructions are on the extinguishers.
    2. For additional Fire Extinguisher information, see Appendix #5.
  5. Sprinkler System (Landlord Maintained)
    1. Sprinkler systems are installed on all floors of the Research Lab.
  6. Fire Exits (Landlord Maintained)
    1. Basement and first floor is serviced by four exit stairways. The second floor is serviced by two exit stairways.
    2. Twenty-four hours per day, doors on the basement, first and second floor are designed so that individuals can enter the stairways from any floor but cannot normally exit onto another floor. In a fire alarm condition, the stairway doors will unlock so you can get from one exit stairway to another.
